"Wine is the most healthful and most hygienic of beverages."
Louis Pasteur
“Wine from long habit has become indispensable for my health.”  Thomas Jefferson also declared that "good wine was necessary to life.” Jefferson echoed a sentiment long understood in the great cultures of Europe, as well as with the immigrants who came to this country and brought with them that essential understanding of wine: wine’s first purpose is for health. The Talmud proclaimed: "Wine is the foremost of all medicines: wherever wine is lacking, medicines become necessary."
Wine was the first medicine. For centuries religion played a significant role in promoting wine's use for health. Paul the Apostle recommended drinking wine for the benefit of the stomach and digestion. Catholic monasteries regularly used wine for various medical treatments. So closely tied was the role of wine and medicine that the first printed book on the subject of wine was written by a physician, and it dealt with wine's treatment of various medical illnesses, including even dementia.
A bottle of wine contains almost three pounds of grapes. Just think about that!  You don’t eat the seeds of the grapes when you eat the whole grape, but the seed extract is in the wine ~ the wine is better than eating the actual grapes.
There are two powerful antioxidants in grapes: grape seed extract and resveratrol.  The first is obviously found in the seeds of the grape, which most of us don’t consume when we eat fresh grapes.  The second, resveratrol, is found in the skin of red grapes, mainly.  Grape seed extract improves blood pressure, reduces inflammation, increases circulation, and reduces the effects of free-radicals in the cardiovascular system.  The antioxidants in grape seed extract are 20 to 50 times more powerful than Vitamin C and Vitamin E respectively.
Resveratrol is sounding more and more like a miracle being intensely studied now for its anti-aging properties.  60 Minutes aired a program devoted to resveratrol as the foundation of the “Mediterranean Diet.”
Both grape seed extract and resveratrol are the foundation blocks for health and longevity and if consumed every day would be a health insurance policy to defend us against the “American” diet which contains almost no natural nutrients at all ~ how could it... at over 85% GMO?
As evidenced in the chemical-free section , wine contains an alarming amount of chemical additives in the manufacturing of wine.  That does not include the magnitude of pesticides/fungicides being applied in the vineyards because of GMO vine plants which now dominate the world vineyards.

As recently reported in the world press, leading consumer organizations revealed that laboratory testing of French wines from across the country found as many as 14 different pesticides/fungicides in every bottle, including those made from organically-grown grapes.
The issue is now so desperate in France it has also been reported that the government is prosecuting an organic winemaker for failing to apply insecticide to his vines;  The government is also throwing people in jail for protesting further GMO experimentation.
Chemical/toxins in wine are particularly devastating for human health as the alcohol in wine seriously increases the chemical compounding impact to the human body.  Whole Foods is an organization that brought the peril of chemical proliferation in our food to the forefront as well as the risks of genetic modification.  But the wine pitfalls are yet to be confronted, and in fact, they are ignored if they are even understood; the reliance on the excessive quantity of chemical additives in wine with no oversight about how much applied or when applied is a massive problem for the health and well-being of our society.  It is also a problem for those who want to experience and savor authentic flavors in wine.
